A dental appliance is not required or a standard of practice for pre-MMA work-up.

However, it is reasonable to try...if you think it may help avoid surgery. Some people have gone this route, and I certainly would've too. Personally, I wouldn't buy into using it as a pre-op test for an MMA. The rationale is there...but on the other hand, your surgeon should already have enough data to let you know if you are a good operative candidate or not. Besides, you may not tolerate the dental device either (this does happen). Then, you'd be out $800 and you wouldn't have the data from proper use of the device, and you might or might not have the surgery anyway.

Try it only if you think it will help avoid surgery.
