This whole process began because food was getting caught in my throat when I was eating and I'd begin choking. When I went to my ENT, he did all the allergy testing (mostly to rule it out), then sent me for the apnea test. I'd never thought I had apnea, though I do have some of the symptoms and my husband is always complaining about my snoring. At any rate, the tests showed my problem was NOT with stopping breathing, but that the oxygen levels drop to dangerous levels for 70% of the night. My ENT is convinced it's due to the anatomy of my jaw and mouth. My dentist has been harping on me for years to have orthodontic work done. I couldn't afford it as a dental problem since it isn't covered by insurance, but as a medical problem most of it should be.

In addition to the jaw being small and recessed, it is also very narrow and I have large bony formations in the bottom of my mouth. My lower teeth are very crooked since there is not enough room for them. Getting x-rays at the dentist has always been very painful for me. I'd rather get a filling than an x-ray. They have to use the smallest child size x-ray cards for my lower teeth since nothing else will fit.

So given all that plus what my dentist and ENT said, it's pretty ovbious surgery is needed to pull the jaw forward and to widen it as well. So it's hard for me to see what a dental appliance is going to accomplish aside from depleting my wallet.

Based on all your comments, I decided to call the surgeon back and made an appointment to see him in 2 weeks and discuss in detail his reasoning for the appliance and my options. I'll do my research between now and then so I am able to hold my own during the discussion. I found the site rating and pricing many of the appliances, so I will take that with me. If anyone has other sites they can recommend to help me gather information I would appreciate it if you could share them with me.

Thank you for the information and I'll keep checking back for more comments.
