What are arch bars?

Posted by sickntired on June 02, 2006 at 14:31:29:

I understand that arch bars are used after most bimaxillary advancements for about six weeks to hold the jaws in place -- but I don't understand what they do, what they look like, where they go, etc.

Can someone explain in detail?
