Arch bars are a set of curved bars with short tines (similar to a fork) or short fingers. They are wired to the front of the teeth with the tines pointing up for the top teeth and down on the bottom teeth. Rubber bands similar to those used on retainers or braces are then stretched between the tines (upper to lower). Depending on how many bands and how many tines on each bar the bands are strecthed across determines on how immobile your jaws become. In my case, they bands started after two days abd were stretched between two adjacent tines on the top and two on the bottom in four places. I could use a small set of hemostates to remove the bands a few times a day to rinse out my mouth and make it easier to drink meals. The arch bars are much more desireable than wired fixation.
