The healing rate is as different from patient to patient as there are patients. I was one of the extremes. I had it performed on a Friday and went back to work a week from the the next Monday. I quite taking pain meds the day I went home. My jaws were held shut for about 5 weeks with the arch bars and rubber bands. I noticed better breathing at about two weeks after the majority of swelling was gone. I used to wake up choking almost nightly, haven't since the surgery, over three years ago. I hadn't dreamt in years but started dreaming the night after surgery. I now dream every night. It took about 8 months for the tingly sensation to go away in most of the mouth and about 14 months to regain full sensation. If you are over forty, there is a chance that some areas may stay numb for much longer, may even be permanent. The chance was something I was willing to live with. Glad I had it done.
