6 month Post MMA/GA update

Posted by groggy on June 06, 2006 at 21:06:11:

Hello All,

Well, I got the results from my resent sleep study, which was at 5 months and one week after MMA/GA surgery. I'm better but not cured.
Age:52, Gender:male
AHI=Apnea Hypopnea Index

Before surgery: AHI=25
After surgery: AHI=14.4

Better, but to be cured the AHI needs to be below 5.

My MMA/GA was with Dr. P at Stanford on 12/5/05. He did a great job and moved my jaws 10mm forward.

A little history:
10/2000, AHI=15.7, My first sleep study
11/2001, Traditional sinus surgery
01/2003, AHI=11.5, Sleep study
04/2004, Modified UPPP surgery (EUPF flap surgery)
07/2004, AHI=33.2, Post Op Sleep study (Notice something?)
11/2004, Hyoid bone advancement, coblation of Tongue
09/2005, AHI=25, Post Op Sleep study
12/2005, MMA/GA Surgery
05/2006, AHI=14.4, Post Op Sleep study

Sorry to bore you with this, but I listed this info for the benefit of anyone that's just starting this journey.

If you noticed, my apnea got 3 times worse after getting my soft palette worked on. Be careful out there!

Other things I'd like to share.

Headaches: I've learned a lot about headaches, the hard way! Be careful of REBOUND HEADACHES. Many of us wake up with headaches due to OSA. Try not to take Ibuprofen or Tylonal too often or you may end up getting dull, long lasting rebound headaches nearly everyday. It happened to me! Do a google search on "rebound headache" to find out more.

Blood Pressure: Many of us with OSA have high blood pressure. My old prescription for my blood pressure, Diltiazem (calcium channel blocker), was increasing the number of headaches I was getting. I've switched to a diuretic type medicine, which is working out much better for me. So, if your a headache sufferer, question everything, don't just blame your apnea.

I have an appointment this friday with a local ENT. I'll be getting sinus surgery again because my sinuses are a little more crowded after MMA.

Yes, I am disappointed. I was hopeing to be cured once and for all. But I'm too close to give up!

Take care,
George
