There appears to be no downside to removing the tori.

My own are BIG. They get in the way when I have dental x-rays on my front teeth. I will be having some gum surgery (crown lengthening) done in the next couple of years and the periodontist often removes them at that time. So it's somewhat routine.

With their size, it makes sense that they could contribute to tongue crowding.

I'm not at all convinced they are a root cause, as the article seems to imply - but all contributing factors need to be addressed in a multi-factorial situation.
