While I usually agree with whatever Mike says...I must confess, we are only in 90% agreement today.

First, definitely do see Dr. P and see what he recommends. He may recommend a lesser procedure or none at all. Clearly, he does not need the business and won't have you go through with anything you don't absolutely need. Unless, your ultimate goal is to attain the same clinical status and have the trach closed (?).

The insurance and monetary hassle is definitely a big hurdle. While many of us worked it out...it is a major factor. Not everyone has a great financial result here...and that is realistic.

Many people do get a good result. Some will not get a clean 100% or even 80% cure...but most will be better off than before.

This is where I disagree with Mike. No procedure is perfect, not even good ones that have stood the test of peer review and time. Horror stories may relate to the surgeon...but may as well result from a competent surgeon doing a good procedure in a technically difficult situation. Bad things can happen to good people. Complications, though rare, are still devastating if that 1% happens to be you.

The advancement of the maxilla will change your facial architecture (duh), so voice your cosmetic concerns ahead of time. There is a nose flaring that can happen with some people who are advanced. I believe that this can be compensated for (to a certain degree) in the primary surgery, or corrected at a later date.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

B.
