Surgery can be scary and you have a right to be worried. Reading some of the postings in this forum had me second guessing my decision to have surgery. In the end, I had to go with my gut instinct and proceed. I have no regrets so far.

I had UPPP/tonsillectomy on 5/31 and Septoplasty on 8/23. The UPPP was my first surgery ever and I went into it hoping that everything would come out OK. I tended to be more worried about the surgery itself, but in retrospect, the surgery itself was a piece of cake. The recovery is the challenging part but it was not as bad as some of the other people have stated in these forums.

With the UPPP procedure, I was out of work for 2 weeks. This is supposed to be one of the more painful type of surgeries because of the need to eat/drink afterwards and the difficulty in healing in the warm moist environment of the throat. It did hurt but is tolerable if you keep up with the pain medication - which means taking every 4 hrs without fail, even during the night. I would highly recommend that you set an alarm to wake you up in order to take the pain medication. The pain of going beyond the 4 hours is not worth a little extra sleep. To me the pain felt like having a bad case of strep throat.

Plan on being on a mostly liquid diet for the first week and soft foods for the second week. The thing that worried me most was the swelling and numbness in my tongue but this went away.

My ENT did not recommend having the Septoplasty at the same time as the UPPP, so I postponed it. For me, having a clear nose to breath from after throat surgery was a higher priority than getting both procedures done at the same time.

Good luck with your surgery.
