Lisa, I may get blasted from other forum users for saying this, but here goes......I have been trached for several months. I was trached with a shiley 6, and inflated the cuff to hook to bipap at night. It was not living. I did not get enough air even open during the day to go about my normal daily activities, by any stretch of the imagination. I felt that I had been trached to live, but felt so rotten with so little air coming in that I wasn't sure I wanted to after all. It was truly a horrible experience with so little breath coming in that little tube, and the memory haunts me still. Walking into the Drs. office was barely do-able, and driving was out of the question without more air. I repeated the sleep study and was able to give up the bipap. I then requested a larger tube, and did the research myself on the montgomery cannula. The end result was that it worked out well, and having suffered the effects of the tiny size 6, I went for a size 10 montgomery. It has worked out very well. The problem is getting others with trachs to tell you the ENTIRE story, the whole shebang, and trust you to decide for yourself along with your physician, what is best in your individual case. Some here have loads of helpful information to share, but are afraid of giving you as much as they have, in fear of being perceived as giving medical advice. You can only hope for helpful information, not medical advice. Something to spur your thoughts and questions, not necessarily something that you should do. The problem is, being trached is such a life changing decision, you need every tiny bit of information that you can get, including the relating of others experiences, so that you can do your own research and reach your own conclusions with your physician. One more thing, in the hospital every medical professional will tell you, to never ever leave your trach open in any circumstances. The reality is, many many people with trachs go open, 24/7. That shocked me after having medical personnel drill me on leaving it capped, but it is reality, not textbook data that I needed to think about. Hope I've given you helpful info. to consider. You go for it, and don't let ANYONE tell you that you don't need more air! One inhalation thru a larger tube, and you'll know for yourself. Go for it.
