Stanford had you sleep on your back because that usually is the worst position for anyone. In that way there would be sufficient pressure to prevent apneas whether your are on your back or on your side or on your stomach. However, if you are highly positional, when not on your back you may not be able to tolerate the extra unneeded pressure.
This is a wild guess/question coming up. Do you have aches and pains in your joints after sleeping on your stomach?
