It sounds like your asthma is not controlled. You need to focus on getting that controlled. That could attribute you some of your breathing problems. You might try some lung(deep breathing) exercises to build them up.

Adjustment period is different for everyone. I had a lot of secretions and coughed my head off for 6 months. No fun but without the trach I would have been dead. It gets easier when you realize it is saving your life--you also must have a positive attitude about it. I started out with a size 10 Shiley cuffed trach. I could not speak a word with it. I didn't speak for 4 weeks. I then went to a Shiley fenestrated size 6 for a couple of weeks. Then a size 6 Jackson(Silver) trach with an inner cannula. This is what I have had for almost 4 years and would not trade it.
I do not feel starved for air. I do have a breathing problem but it's not because of the trach.
The secretions usually get to be less and less. I am assuming the dressing you are refering to is the one under the faceplate. As your stoma heals it will become tight with your tube and you probably will not need to wear that dressing.
I am going to post separately what kind of a trach a friend of mine uses with a vent or BiPAP.
