Tracheostomy is usually only used the cases of life threatening OSA or if all other avenues of treatment have failed. Maxillofacial surgerys: Genioglossal advancement, maxillary & mandibular advancement. Only your ENT can tell you if you are a candidate for these. Other options include: OPAP, oral applicances.Since you have had UPPP it is hard to say if Somnoplasty would do you much good. There have been some studies done on electrical stimulation but I don't think all the data is in on that one yet.
I have not had any infections around my trach.You have to keep the site clean in order to avoid infections. I don't find I get anymore colds than anyone else--for me usually once a year. Inconvience--I think is how you look at it.There is a lot of material on trachs on this forum search the archieves to learn more about it.
