MMA/GA - 6 Week Update

Posted by E in San Francisco Bay Area on December 13, 2006 at 01:09:34:

I've been back at work for just under two weeks now, and everything is going smoothly. I can say at the six week point that the six weeks leading up to the surgery were much worse than the six weeks after the surgery. Here's an update:

SLEEP
Still dreaming...feel rested.

SWELLING
None to report on.

Still using vaseline on my lips...down to once or twice a day....

PAIN
My chin fire (burning sensation)is pretty much gone....comes on very rare occasions, and is much less intense.

I can actually smile now without feeling like I'm stretching or splitting my lips.

NUMBNESS
A little here and there on the left side of the face. Not bad at all.

EATING

Still on a soft diet...but I've moved up to lasagna....I have a tight masseter (sp?) on the right side (tight jaw muscle). It's been in spasm for about five months now. I messed it up before the surgery do to too major anxiety. I kept doing a self test by jutting my jaw forward to see if I could feel my tongue come off my throat. Over did it and have had a muscle in spasm ever since. That's what anxiety will do to you. Interesting how I could mess my eating up by playing with my jaw more than the MMA itself could. I've actually been on a pretty soft diet since July because of it. Anyways my mental state is much better and I can feel the muscle gradually relaxing as I go through the MMA recovery process.

Can only open my mouth about 15mm. Because of the tight muscle in my jaw, Dr. P doesn't want me to rush this so he said not to worry about it and didn't want to give me any exercises just yet.

I hear a clicking sound in my mouth coming from the upper jaw or upper teeth when I push my tongue against the roof of my mouth. I called Dr. P's office and Dr. S said it's probably just my teeth settling. My first thought was that a screw was loose or something.

Eating healthier than ever...soft diet has forced me out off fast food, and i'm off caffene since the surgery. Plan to keep it up. Feel better than I have in a long time.

Got the first denial from the insurance company for having the surgeon covered as "in network". Not disapointed because it was expected. Will write my next appeal to them tomorrow.
