I think the movement of the soft tissue depends on the person. Look at western joes blog to see how much his airway opened up (google "Bimax stanford"). My initial x-ray showed an opening that wasn't as impressive, but I'm sleeping much better.

I think it is worth the money to travel and see a specialist at Stanford or elsewhere, even if you don't plan on having an MMA there.

As for the appearance, it seems common that most people feel they look better after the surgery. I feel that way. I did have a recessed lowed jaw though. I haven't seen anybody comment on looking like an "ape" after the surgery, but I know it's a common concern for a lot of people going in.
