I'm sorry, but, I do not share any concern's about what I will look like after my MMA. It has been 5 days since my surgery. My family, co-workers, and friends all asked if it would make me look different. My reply was "If they had to alter my looks for the better or worse in order to make me get sleep then it will have been worth it!" My doctors (a big team here in Dallas which is used to helping children look more "normal") were afraid of how much different I would look if they gave me the full 10mm advancement. They were so concerned that they made two splints, one at 7mm to see if they could "get by" with minimal advancement and one at 10mm. They met together while I was on the table, even calling in other members of the team to get their opinion. They all agreed that the 10mm was fine - in fact, they feel that it will make me look about 10 years younger (I'm a handsome 46-yr old). Time will tell, but, it sure doesn't bother me one bit as to whether or not I'll look the same. I got a total of 8 hours sleep my second night after surgery -that's right, I got SLEEP!!! Real sleep, not some choking, gagging deathtrap of a substitute. What the H... do I care what I look like? I feel like the wrongfully accused man who is being released from years fo torturous prison life. If they were to stop me at the gate and said "We'll let you go, but you have to look like somebody else." - I'd say do what you have to do and hand me the keys, I'm out of here! Would I do it all again? - twice! Do I care what I look like? - It would be nice to look the same, but, we all age and change anyway. Who am I fooling? I care more about my personal quality of life than what some others may think of my looks. Perhaps if you are overly concerned about the results then your sleep deprivation isn't really so tough to live with that you should go through with this. I was concerned about effectiveness, living through it, and getting my insurance company to play nice. I never thought twice about my looks.
