Posted by Jeremy on December 18, 2006 at 06:57:49:Wed., 12/13, I had a 10mm advancement. They also released my hyoid suspension. The first night was not fun. My "breathing tube" clogged with blood and I could not breath through it. I also had a tube in the other nostril for gastric fluids, it's a good thing. I threw up once upon awakening from anesthesia and the gastric tube took care of that just fine.
Notes:
1) When you wake up, lubricate (K/Y) the catheter used to suction out your mouth or it won't go to the back of your mouth very easily. You have to get it to the back, where the splint leaves a gap behind your molars, and suction out all of the old blood. This is a critical step to going home soon.
2) If you do this well, and your breathing tube clogs, you can now breath from between your teeth. Not comfortable, but it kept my vital signs above the worrisome point.
3) You may get a migraine due to anesthesia and stress. In my case, it wasn't so bad. I have trigeminal neuralgia, so my pain calibration is much different from others'. It was still bad enough to bring tears to my eyes ;>)
4) I had my medicines provided in liquid form prior to the surgery. This was good, as the mere fear of trigeminal neuralgia was enough to make me cry (and yes, I'm a 46 yr. old man). For those with Trigeminal neuralgia, my case may be different, but, I took the liquid form of medicine used to treat this and did not experience any of the dreaded pain related to this. Thank goodness!
OK, so, I was out of the ICU in one day. I went home the next (I live here in Dallas). That's right, home in two days. I feel great. My swelling is not too bad to deal with. I quit taking pain medicine on the third night, just don't really need it. I use humidifiers and guafenesin(sp?) and drink lots of water at night to keep the drainage flowing. It's important to drain all of that stuff to promote healing. My doctor's main concern is that I lie still for a week to let the bones and skin regrow. I'm getting real sleep. Sleep - it sounds so good to type this. Sleep. Thank you, Lord, for I am getting sleep.
