I think the biggest risk is ...that it won't work !

Compared to all other modalities it is the best out there...YOU CAN'T LEAVE OSA UNTREATED ! Although it is imperfect by far, it is still the best option for most people.

Longterm chronic use may have theoretical problems...chronic high pressure use may have problems that will manifest slowly over time. Chronic gastric distention may cause problems at the junction of the stomach and esophagus leading to worsening reflux of gastric acids (GERD). chronic exposure to high pressures on lung tissues may cause low grade damage to those tissues (informed speculation...not proven yet in the medical literature) However, even these problems pale by comparison to having OSA untreated.

So yes...not perfect by any means...CPAP(BIPAP, APAP, etc...) is still the mainstay of treatment. Any known ill effects using CPAP definitely does not compare to the multiple linked medical problems that are the consequence of untreated OSA.

Make the PAP machine work if you can...by all means !!! But, if like myself, you can't...then seek other solutions.
