For what it's worth. . . I did not leap into chewing. Initially, I had a hard time fitting a teaspoon in my mouth; so I continued with the straw and began to sip my smoothies. I also dug out my granddaughters' baby spoons (they're twins so I had plenty), and that made for a better start. I remember that the food fell right back out of my mouth, and every so often that still happens especially if what I'm eating doesn't hold together too well. I took it very slowly and became much proficient within a week, but I stuck with thicker smoothies and soups which could hold a butcher knife straight up without toppling. I still have trouble sometimes with a fork. I like the hummus and mashed potato consistency. It really is a challenge given all the numbness. In some ways I feel as if I'm having to relearn the process of eating and articulating. Let's just say I was pretty primitive in the return to chewing if you get my drift? Today I ate a piece of white coconut cake with apricot pieces in the filling. It's a good thing the restaurant wasn't too crowded because there was still some food making an escape from my mouth, not a lot; but I have to say it did happen.
I wonder how much Dana's pain might also be at play here.
