Hmm... Chewing was weird to even try at first, not because of pain or tenderness, but as I had braces the surgeon used a plastic splint thingie wired to the upper teeth - and as a result my upper and lower teeth did not meet. I dont remember if grumpygirl (Dana?) has braces or not.

I didn't really try until after the splint came off - this might be similar to getting your arch bars off.

But! When I expected chewing nirvana at my six week splint removal, I was sorely disappointed. My teeth didn't meet at all! It took at least another week until they shifted enough to sort of work.

My teeth were also a bit sore for a few weeks.

Also, my jaw muscles were in the "wrong place" and I had to get them used to their new configuration.

Overall, though, I realized that chewing is highly UNDER-rated and something easy to take for granted.
