I am new to this forum. As i stated in one of the previous follow ups , i had the MMA surgery on 12/11/07 in upstate N.Y. It was quite an interesting comedy of errors from the beginning. I would have liked to have written a blog like some of you have, but the pain was brutal. Anyway, after the surgery i found out the blood i donated for my surgery never got used (i recieved someone elses). I was restrained in my bed in ICU b/c the nurses said i was flailing and trying to get out of bed (i would tap the arm rests b/c I couldnt speak to get their attention). My first, fine nurse in my regular room, said she never learned how to use the wire cutters they taped over my bed (what a way to instill confidence in a patient). I'm still shocked I didnt vomit before I made it home.My mouth was supposed to be wired shut for a week; and i had the meet with my surgeon, at his office, to have them removed a day early. The antibiotic he gave me caused me to visit the bathroom the night before 10x; and the bite plate in between my jaws was breaking up. Needless to say it was a relief to be able to eat more than straight liquids.
Anyway, now i am at 3 weeks and things are healing up normal.
My main issue now is that i cant sleep with out vicodin b/c the pain from my top jaw is killing me when i lay down on my pillow. If i sleep sitting up then i slide down over a few hours and end up how i would normally sleep. Also, i get knots in my back and neck. Everytime the rubber bands are adjusted, my bottom incisors feel like they will pop out. The pain is so intense and severe that ibuprofen or aleve at the prescription doses wont cut it. My surgeon is beginning to give me a hard time about getting more vicodin scripts from him. He wants to turn me over to a pain management specialist to help manage the pain long term. My question is - What has everyone else been given for long term pain control? I'm at week three post op and my orthodontist told me i have 6 months of braces left. For me this means more weeks of chronic pain from adjustments (from rubber bands or thicker wires to adjust my bite).
Lastly, i take ibuprofen or aleve to make it through the day but this really isnt cutting it that well.
