Correction - looked on the web, and Stage 1-4 (non-REM) sleep together is 75-80% of our sleep time, with REM sleep being the other 20-25%.

Sleep cycles are around 90 minutes for the five stages. Early sleep cycles have less REM and later ones have more REM.

Maybe interrupted sleep sort of resets the cycle so one is always progressing through an early cycle (with less REM).
