Thanks BillyB:
I did go to 4 TMJ specialists and it seemed like the ones that
knew or was friends with this surgeon said yes do the TMJ
surgery but they did not seem firm in there yes but one seemed
more firm that the other. He said he just does total joint
replacement now, and added just get total joint replacement if
the TMJ surgery does not work. Either with just total joint
replacement and/or redo of MMA. The other two that said no to
the TMJ were strong in there view.Other surgeons I saw that do MMA said they disagree with this
surgeon and I do not see it being done except be one surgeon
that was trainned by this surgeon. I have see about 10 surgeons
that do the MMA and none of them recommed TMJ. I told and
faxed my MRI of my TMJ to two MMA surgeons that do MMA
surgeries more than others. Both disagreed with the TMJ
surgery it seemed very strongly and would do the MMA with out
TMJ surgery. One said very strongly the TMJs should not be
touched. If you look at question 38 in Ask a Sleep Surgeon this
question seems to strongly address that MMA causing TMJ
problems are rare indeed, redo of MMA or total joint replacement
is rare indeed. Hay none of the other MMA surgeons even
requested a MRI of my TMJ and I do not see on this site hardly
any body complaining of TMJ problems, but maybe the TMJ
problems like this surgeon seem to suggest come after 2 year
studies. But from what I see this is the only surgeon writing
about it except another article by another surgeon writting the
case against it.Also studies I have seem to imply only a 3 to 4 percent risk of
jaw surgery causing TMJ problems. Also I have read articles that
say jaw surgery can improve TMJ and a lot of people have TMJ
problems go into Jaw advancement surgery. However, I would never think I had TMJ problems because I do
not have pain or any other TMJ symptoms. But the famous
surgeon that wants to do MMA and TMJ at the same time said
that makes it worst.I was told this famous surgeon is aggressive with TMJ surgery
and a lot of surgeons do not agree with him and he is into
inventing new things through the year and does surgery different
my. But a lot on surgeons think he is great espically for redox. But he is older now and residents do some of this surgery. And I
read he teaches residents difficult surgeries.Bottem line what would any of you do. Common sense and the
established way of doing MMA seems to strongly suggest no
MRI of TMJ be done before MMA or jaw advancement and the
studies seem to indicate only a 3 to 4 percent risk.So why take a 30 percent risk of of pain from this TMJ surgery.
The only thing causing this dilemma is this famous surgeon, who
I was told was a good or excellent surgeon, say a 70 percent
risk of redo of the MMA and/total joint replacement which I do
not see anywhere supported in studies by others. Just his
articles seem to support it.Hay if I had TMJ pain and need MMA as bad as I do I would do
it with this famous surgeon. He is know for that when people
have TMJ pain and nothing else has worked.
