I figured it was time to give you my 6 month post MMA/GA update. My procedures were done in Boston on 8/9/07. These have been my only surgeries for OSA.
Sleep: I don’t sleep with a BiPAP mask anymore, and that is great. I don’t need to take an Ambien every night to tolerate the BiPAP mask, and that's good too. I am dreaming. On the down side, my mouth drops open when I sleep on my back – it never used to do this. When on my back, I also snore. This causes me to wake up to the point of consciousness. I suspect that I am probably waking even more than I am aware of. I do my best to sleep on my side. My left shoulder is starting to pop a bit because of all the time spent on it. My Restless Leg symptoms seem to have gotten worse, and my doctor suggested and iron supplement which seems to help.
Sensation: I am still fairly numb in lower left lip and below it on face of my chin. I can feel touch, as well as hot and cold, but it feels a bit leaden when I speak. I feel that the timing of my jokes, ability to do impersonations, and ability say anything in French are all adversely affected. I believe this will improve with time. In my upper teeth and palate, my sensations are coming back well.
Overall Health: My mood varies greatly, pretty much in parallel with how rested I feel. I have noticed that I am really sensitive to disruptions in my sleep patterns (staying up late, becoming overly tired, or a bad night of sleep). These things throw me off for days or weeks. Overall, I am slowly trending in a positive direction. I have begun to exercise regularly. There are days were I have a lot of energy.
Appearance: It took me 5 months before I wasn’t totally surprised by what I saw in the mirror. I am still not fond of the change, but I never thought I was that great to look at before. Hopefully, I will get used to it. Maybe once the braces are off, I’ll feel better about everything.
Ortho: I eat just about all kinds of food, but don’t feel I can really chomp down on anything hard. I still have braces, and am now having some small cosmetic adjustments done. I will probably have them off by summer.
Would I do it again?: I am still not entirely sure, but as time passes my inclination to say "yes" grows.
Next steps: I have a sleep study scheduled in late February to measure my sleep post op. I am very curious to see what it shows.
Regards,
-DS
