He says that a "success" is having an RDI of 20 or less, if I remember his words correctly. What I'm thinking about now is what are the long-term things I need to consider. I don't need braces now, but I guess that is a possibility after the surgery. I also understand that there could be some permanent numbness, mainly in the chin and cheek areas. I have already had the UPPP, and CPAP is a continuing nightmare that is only made tolerable by sedatives. I have a couple of risk factors...I am male, I have a 20" neck, and I have a tongue on the larger side. I have some extra weight, but every doctor I have talked to about this says that I am not carrying enough to have a significant impact on OSA. I have snored very loudly since childhood, and the surgeon pointed out the structural reasons for my apnea. He put me as a 9 out of 10 for canidacy for this surgery and a probable "cure".
What I really need to consider, is that at age 36, I will have a long time to live with any side effects. Now, I understand that there are many risks, but out of all of you who have had the procedure, how difficult are to ongoing side effects? Is it hard to eat, talk, make certain faces, or anything else? Are you now permanently limited in certain things? Do you have any issues with food or liquids going up your nose that started and may or may not have gone away? Do you still need CPAP? I'd appreciate any thoughts you have. This is a big decision, and I want to know as much as possible. Thanks!
