I sleep on my side by choice (I reliably choke when on my back), but, all too often wake up on my belly with my head and neck twisted uncomfortably. Sleeping on my side was fine until I got a little too much rest in the wrong position one night and woke up with my shoulder numb and "asleep" in the right front. The only problem was, although I did massage and try to restore blood flow, it never fully "woke up." That was three months ago or so, and that shoulder now has a distinct crunching sound when I move it and it is sore in the general area of the joint much of the time. My family doctor seemed to chock it up to getting older. No, I don't mean to whine about getting too much sleep! I recognize it as the gift that it is. In the last few days, I have tried a different pillow under my head. That seems to be slowly helping with the neck stiffness. I haven't had a sleep test since my surgery Perhaps I still suffer from the central apneas. I theorize this because of the nature of my awakenings (extreme adreneline rush, gasp, blood pressure suge, heart pounding, darn hard to get back to sleep, etc...). But please don't get me wrong. My quality of life is so much better than before the MMA. The depression and constant half-awake nature of my life is no longer an issue. I feel "better" now than when I was in my twenties (I'm 47). Of course, quitting alcohol consumption has helped too. I don't want to "stroke out" due to apnea-related issues though. Thus, I imagine it's about time for a follow-up sleep study and maybe a 'scope of my airway if the sleep study shows dangerous oxygen desat or the like. And, yes, my remaining apneas/hypopneas have also drastically reduced post-MMA as long as I sleep on my side. Thanks for asking!
