I used a dental appliance. It was custom made for me. It did work fine in combatting sleep apnea, but after a couple of months, I found that it was pulling my teeth out of alignment somewhat. After I got approved for MMA, I discontinued. My surgeon seemed to feel encouraged about about the effectiveness of the dental appliance. I think that he thought it would be a good predictor of MMA success. When I wore that appliance, I did not have TMJ pain, but I could imagine that if I continued to use it, that could have developed. I have done a fair bit of research on appliances. I think that they might effect different people in different ways. Probably they are more effective in some people. I think it is worth trying. They can be used in conjunction with CPAP.
