Freddy,

First of all, realize that an MMA is major surgery...and that it is elective. Meaning , don't rush into anything until you get your ducks in a row. Get all the clearance that you need...and let your hives get cleared up before subjecting yourself to this operation.

Cardiac clearance is essential for all of us who have risk factors in our past for any major procedure that we are about to undergo. The MMA involves significant blood loss (500-1000cc) which can stress your heart. It is a 3-5 hour procedure under general anesthesia...which can stress your heart. So all in all, getting those tests were very prudent. Actually dying from an MI during surgery is a bit exagerated, however, no one wants to road test that concept ! The problem is that having any type of successful modern intervention to treat your heart attack during or after your MMA is very limited.

An ultrasound for gallstones is also prudent. After an MMA, you can have a "gallbladder attack" (biliary colic)if you have gallstones already from being in a starved state with a nearly empty stomach. A gallbladder operation done nowadays is pretty routine...except if your jaws are wired shut, and if done when your gallbladder is "hot" or inflammed. Getting this checked out and dealt with before your MMA is also a good move !

Another problem that can give you chest discomfort is esophageal reflux and spasm (GERD). But, this is better worked up after your gallbladder is clarified . Generally, this means you'll need some additional meds to take by mouth. Once again, better to clarify this before your MMA.

Of course, you should get your hives sorted out by an allergist as much as possible before getting surgery. One of the most successful medications used to treat a significant allergic reaction can limit your ability to heal, and perhaps make you more prone to infections. Try to sort this out before surgery.

Why did you think you were having heart attacks ? What were your symptoms ??

Once again, eventhough the MMA may help you with your OSA, IT IS ELECTIVE SURGERY. The timing is up to you. It completely makes sense for you to sort out and be cleared from major medical problems that can side-track your recovery !

Good luck, and best wishes...

Bill
