A rough estimate based on posts here is that 25-30% of people have braces either before (and during) or after surgery.

With braces before, and coordination between your surgeon and orthodontist, there will be more options in advancement - since your jaws don't have to be advanced the same amount, you might be able to get more. For instance, I was advanced 12 mm on the bottom and 7 mm on the top. I would not have gotten the same advancement if my teeth had to move in sync.

It seems like most do not feel comfortable with things like apples, nuts, and crunchy stuff for closer to six months on average. And if you're in braces, forget about that stuff anyway until you're done.
