What a great question. Personally, I don't know of anything. I think that surely there is a lot under development because surgeons, doctors, PH.D students etc. need to do research to qualify for grant money, so they are constantly in motion. They have to test out new things etc.

I think that lay people on this board will not be able to supply anything but candid guesses. To *really* answer that question, you would have to do a little digging. One thing you could do is to speak to the people on the front lines, the surgeons, academics, researchers, etc. I bet that some of the people who could give you a really good answer are people are the well known surgeons or professors such as Dr. Lee, Dr. Dement, Dr. Guilleminault, Dr. Powell, etc. These people attend international sleep medicine forums and international sleep congresses. Doctors from all over the world gather and discuss the most recent developments.

If you read Dr. Dement's book, The Promise of Sleep, you can see some references to these forums. For example, Dement mentions that he had attened the First International Congress of Sleep Research in Brugge, Belgium back in '71. (Incidentally, it was at that conference that he met an elite French surgeon named Dr. Christian Guilleminault, and persuaded him to join the Stanford Univ team. Guilleminault has gone on to make discoveries and play a big role in sleep apnea research.

I hope you will find out more about what are the latest developments. If you do, please post it. Also, why not ask Dr. K.L. in "Ask the Expert" section.
