Yes, I saw some of the same studies. They weren't about chlorhexadine destroying enamel, but about whether it helped or hindered the *bonding* between the enamel and the bracket.

The biggest source of acid on your teeth is not what you eat or drink, it is dental plaque. Normal foods contribute to its growth.

Plaque releases copious amounts of acid which destroy both enamel and gum tissue.

The problem is that during times when you cannot perform normal dental hygiene (post oral/dental surgery) you must do something to limit the spread of plaque (it happens very fast). Chlorhexadine is considered the most effective way to do this.

(During my MMA recovery I was not able to brush and floss for around 3-4 weeks. I shudder to think of how bad my teeth would have been without chlorhexadine.)

There may well be true issues with it's use, and we *should* know about them. But I'd hate to see someone throw away their bottle of chlorhexadine while recuperating and then deal with enamel loss due to massive plaque buildup.

On a personal note, I'm sorry to hear about your teeth - it seems that often it's two steps forward, one step back.
