Posted by brandyleigh35 on April 17, 2008 at 23:23:07:I'm coming up on 11 months post MMA and thought I would post an update regarding my progress.
Things still continue to improve. I think it was Seattle Bill who said this journey was not a race but a marathon, or something like that. Anyway, I have to say that he was soo very right about that. It was hard to really comprehend a year of recovery when I first heard it was going to be that long, but at almost 11 months I have to say that I'm still improving everyday, it is just in very small doses.
The left part of my tongue still has some numb patches on it, but is improving ever so slowly still. I have gotten a tremendous amount of feeling back just about everywhere. At this point in time I have a small area on the left hand side of my lip that extends down about 1/2 and inch that is still numb. It is however, very sensitive, and tingly so I know it is still repairing. I honestly think I may end up having no residual numbness anywhere once this is all finished up.
Talking is sometimes a bit challenging mostly due to that one area on my lip, but eating is no longer an issue and even the area around my bone graft and implant is not longer tender. I still have a bit of residual numbness in my front and lower teeth. It is coming back but is slow. It took me 15 months to get full and complete feeling back after my palate expansion surgery so I'm expecting about the same for this whole process. I look forward to the day I can bite into things again and actually feel it rather then fake it.
My sleep is amazing now. My dreams are clear, with vivid detail and color. I wake rested and have no more headaches. My mental acuity has increased ten fold (which has been great as I truly thought I was getting AlZheimers for awhile there) I have a ton of energy now, my friends say I'm like the energizer bunny as I just keep going and going now.
I lost 18 pounds after surgery and have gained about 7 of it back. I have been holding pretty steady since then and don't see things getting worse only better in the weight deparment.
Would I do it again? In a second! without hesitation! I feel like I have gotten my life back, and to top it off I have a more balanced face, straight teeth, A CHIN!, and feel like a million bucks, oh and did I mention I'm sleeping!
It has been, an still continues to be, a long and rather drawn out journey, but Im grateful everyday for the benefits I have received from this surgery and don't mind the wait. If things stopped healing right here and now, I would still be completely thrilled with my results.
So that is my 11 month update. Hopefully next months will have even more outstanding things to report.
