I have scheduled my MMA for June at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. What is funny is that since the day I called to schedule the procedure, my CPAP and I have been getting along quite a bit better. My wife and I are starting to think that now with a possible end in sight, I am less irritated with the machine and better able to tolerate it short-term. I still have to take a temazapam to get any sleep, but I'm having fewer struggles. What I told myself earlier is that I wanted to get to a point where I could tolerate CPAP reasonably well before I made the decision to have the surgery. It's funny that I didn't get to that point until after I scheduled the surgery.
What I have tried to do more recently is to look for reasons to NOT have the surgery. I have been looking for people who didn't have a successful operation. Now we all know that "success" is purely relative. I have been looking for ALL forms of "unsucessful". I have only found two references to an unsuccessful or completely failed result. I still haven't found anyone who had the surgery, had a good improvement, but still needs CPAP. I know we should be focusing on positives, but sometimes we need to hear the negatives to put things in perspective. The surgeon that I am going to has had two failures. This definition of failure is no improvement. One is still a mystery and the other is a person who gained a lot of weight after the surgery and undid all the benefits.
If any of you can point me to posts or people who had the MMA and are still on CPAP, I'd like to read about those. From everything that I've read, I am probably a fairly ideal candidate for this procedure because my weight is not an issue, and there are specific skeletal issues that look like the culprits in my apnea. I have had LOUD snoring since I was in elementary school.
So, I have the 'casting and physical' appointment coming up, and I'm trying to find reasons not to have the surgery. I want to do it, but I also want to hear some bad experiences to put it all into perspective. Sorry for the rambling post. Thanks for any replies.
