Posted by shogun on April 28, 2008 at 16:34:22:Let me give you all a quick summary of my current state:
I had mono about 5 years ago and it caused my tonsils to swell considerably. They never truly recovered from that battle and have been enlarged ever since (one is larger than the other, which I hear is extra bad...or so my ENT says).
Since that time, I started to develop OSA.
To add to that, I have always had trouble with what appears to be a longer than average uvula.
I visited my ENT in 2005 and then again a few weeks ago. He says my tonsils appear no different since the last time I saw him (which was to get clearance for a sleep test and to receive a CPAP machine). The reason I visited him recently was pain in my tonsils.
He says they gotta go. I'm not complaining, I've had reoccurring sore throats for years...I welcome their removal.
Here is where it gets difficult for me. He also recommended the UPPP procedure since I wouldn't want to go through that pain separately and might as well do them together. He says my uvula is abnormally long and I have excess palate that could be removed. I completely believe him, because my uvula has bothered me for some time.
My concern is that I've read SOOO many mixed reviews about the UPPP procedure, yet I feel like it could help given my situation.
With what you read above and the following extra details:
27 yrs old
Male
5'10"
240 (large frame, but also carrying a bit of extra weight)I'd love to hear some post-op results of folks who are of like age and sex...and maybe had similar issues.
P.S. Not that it matters, but my ENT seems very knowledgeable and skilled. I'm not one to hold pedigree schools on a pedestal, because I know some ding-a-lings who were only able to graduate from stanford, harvard, etc. just because their parents had deep pockets.
My ENT has a degree from Yale and has been in practice for 18 years. Again, while I don't hold pedigree schools on a pedestal...it must not be easy to get your medical degree from a top school like Yale. So my thinking is that he probably doesn't shoot from the hip.
Thanks!
