The specifics are kinda complicated, but essentially, your metabolism is altered by lack of deep stage sleep. This triggers not only changes in appetite, but slows your ability to process and metabolize what you do eat (particularly complex carbohydrates).

So it is classic for someone to instruct someone with OSA to "lose weight". It is the first tick on the "healthy living instruction card"...and is great for every body ailment in general. However, it is definitely a "catch-22" because people with OSA can't lose weight as efficiently until they are treated successfully (by whatever means).

It's an awkward problem.

Moreso, because bigger people or people with bigger necks aren't classically the people that OSA surgery is ideally suited for. Unless you have discreet anatomy (like large tongue, small mouth, receding jaw, etc...), surgery might have very little impact on you.
