I would agree with the "mixed effectiveness" of weightloss citation.
Weightloss in general is best for many, many health issues. OSA being one of them. However, the problem is that generalized weightloss may not correlate with loss in specific areas including the posterior oropharynx. Weightloss in specific areas seem somewhat individualized...even in people losing 10, 15, or 20% of their baseline body weight !
It may certainly improve OSA to lose alot of weight...but agian, it is generally not a cure.
Gastric Bypass by the way, is a complex procedure that has high risks of significant complications associated with it (including death). The more benign gastric banding has fewer risks, but even more gradual weightloss. That being said, there are many people who have lost significant amounts of weight with these procedures who still have significant OSA. I know several. One, in fact, tells her story at a sister apnea website. She is still on BIPAP despite successful gastric bypass surgery and loss of 110 pounds.
Unfortunately, there often are no easy cures or predictions. While losing weight is great in principle...it is hard for people with OSA to do...and there are no direct corelations to either loss of intra-abdominal pannus or loss of neck fat.
Every effort might help though.
