My Drs. at Stanford told me when I woke up that everything went great and that they decided to go 15MM instead of the 12MM originally scheduled. My biggest suprise was of how little pain I had compared to phase 1. During my stay in ICU I only needed 1 dose of Morphine after that I felt it was unnecessary so I did not get anymore after that. During my stay in my own room I still needed nothing for pain, I thought this was great but kinda wondered if it was going to me later. I was released on Wed the 30th, my surgery was on Mon the 28th of April.
I'm home and my face feels like it is the size of a basketball. My nose is very swollen and my lips feel like they are going to explode. My teeth at first really felt out of line but now feel much better. I have not slept at all since my surgery, it's to difficult to get relaxed so all you do is sit there with your eyes closed.
My swelling has gone down a lot says all in my family, and I agree that the area away from my mouth and nose is going down but the nose and lips still feel like they are going to explode any minute. When you talk you stretch the bands that keeps your teeth together and this really hurts, so I talk as little as possible. The nose well it's almost impossible to breathe. I take Afrin every 6hrs and it helps a little but not much, you just want to blow your nose but you can't.
Okay, enough of the physical problems, lets talk about eating. I want something to eat so bad. All I've had is Ensure, Slmfast and water. I have lost 10lbs since surgery. Now I have been for the last 2 days taking my pain medicine thinking it will help me sleep. Well it definately relaxes the lips and mouth area and I do rest better, but the tradeoff is I must drink more liquids with more Benefiber.
I have an appointment with Dr. B at Stanford on Fri. 9th of May, he is going to show me how to take the bands off. Hopefully this will take some pressure off my mouth and allow me to eat some soft food. All I can say is that I know this is all going to be worth it and I'm going to feel like a million bucks when I finally heal. Dr.B. said it would be a couple of months before I get any good sleep. I just feel very lucky to have had the best out there for my surgeries. Dr.B is an instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology and Dr. G is the Assistant Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Oral and Maxillofacial. I'll keep you updated for I have a long road to travel. Thank you everyone for all the information it has definately made my surgery go much smoother. I have told my Drs. that they should offer this site for their future patients it's a great way it get information and what to expect after surgery. Fred
