Well, my day is fast approaching. I went into the Mayo Clinic last week for bite casting and a few other measurements with Dr. V. I feel pretty comfortable with the surgeon at this point. I'm pretty nervous about the whole thing, but not too bad. I will be advanced 10mm on both jaws and I may not even need arch bars or to be wired shut. On the other hand, because he is taking out a couple of wisdom teeth at the time, I may need to be wired shut to help support the jaws if there isn't enough bone to screw through. The concern he raised with me more than anything was the fact that I have already had the UPPP and that I could end up with some swallowing and voice issues. He said that they are fixable to a degree with some soft tissue procedures, but would prefer it if I didn't have to do that.

I have planned my life around having to be laid-up for at least 6 weeks, but I hope that I'll be able to get back into things sooner. I won't be able to shoot trap or sporting clays for at least 6 weeks, so I'll miss that a lot this summer, but hopefully my sleep will improve enough to offset that minor incovenience. The hardest thing for me right now is the thought of my apnea not being cured enough to get me off cpap. I still have to take sedatives and wear earplugs to get any sleep with cpap. If I still need to use it after the surgery, it won't be too long before I'm looking at the next step(s). I will still be able to consder the GA and hyoid advancement if this doesn't work. Has anyone had radio frequency treatment to reduce the size of their tongue base either before or after MMA? My hope is that the MMA will at least get things to a point that other, more minor procedures will have a much better chance of helping. Well, enough rambling for now. I hope that the hospital has wireless internet or at least easy access to a pc so I can post here as well as keep up with some other things.

I can honestly say that this decision was made much easier by reading the posts on this site. I feel I'm more aware of potential risks and positive outcomes than I would be otherwise. So, regardless of the outcome, thanks to everyone for posting here. It's all good.
