Yes, I am sleeping with CPAP post-MMA. My situation is that I had a LAUP (laser UPPP) and my airway was narrowed by scar tissue damage. Had an MMA and the result was noticibly better. I am very satisfied.
As for sleeping post-MMA, I would say that I am able to sleep without CPAP, but have a few incidents of shortness of breath. Nothing like before, but nevertheless, I find that by wearing CPAP now, I am able to sleep more comfortably. I guess, I am working with a wider airway as a result of MMA. Pressurizing that airway increases my sleeping comfort. For me, the solution was MMA+GA+(CPAP) = comfortable sleep. I am going to try to lose some weight and try without CPAP.
I never saw CPAP as the enemy. For me, it is a tool, which can be combined with surgery if needed to produce the optimum result. That is my point of view.
My doctor could have made my airway wider, but he told me that if he did, I would end up looking like a gorilla. This is also a consideration that a surgeon has to weigh. How far they can advance you vs. how much your apnea would be treated. Also, just because they advance you far doesn't necessarily mean your apnea would be completely treated. OSA involves many parts of the airway some of which are not addressed by MMA.
I can say for sure that I am much much better off than I was this time last year. I am comfortable. Last night for example, I had a nice sleep and plenty of dreams which I can remember (was running through a hallway looking for my keys!). I had no "jolts" or discomfort.
Basically, I am happy. If I wasn't I would say so. But, I am truly happy.
The thing about CPAP is that it expands the airway. It is like pressurizing a circus tent or tire. By adding pressure, the walls of the airway are about 20% or more wider, and resistance is lessened. MMA widened your airway and so you have a leg up.
My advice to you is to think of the end result as being able to sleep comfortably and function normally. It doesn't matter how you get there. Whatever it takes.
