My sleep has become increasingly less satisfying over the last ten years. I sometimes wake up during the night gasping for air, and my wife wakes me up frequently because I have stopped breathing. I wake up in the morning to start my day feeling like I have already been awake for 24 hrs! I am fed up, and have been referred to the University of Maryland Sleep Center by my physician. My sleep study revealed that I have an RDI (AHI) index of 53.5/hr and a low oxygen desaturation of 69%. I was put on CPAP. After being on CPAP for over a month, I am seeking out other possibilities. I am having a real problem with CPAP. It has reduced my RDI down to 12.6, but I just can't tolerate it on my face any longer than 5 hrs. I am still extremely exhausted. Consequently, I have been referred to an ENT by the name of Dr. Jeffrey Wolfe. I know that I have very large tonsils, a huge uvula, lots of hanging soft tissue, and a blocked nostril. Perhaps surgery will at least help me to tolerate CPAP better. My question at this point is - has anybody had surgery through the University of Maryland Sleep Center and what was your experience? I know it is early in this game, but I know that this forum has a lot of people who understand my situation. I am a 53 year old male who is 6' 2" and 220 lbs. I am still fairly muscular and don't really have a lot of extra weight on my body. I was told that I do not fit the typical profile of people with severe sleep apnea. I would appreciate any advice or information that anyone has.thanks
