After all, having had an MMA 13 months ago, who (not I) would have thought that I would go on to have some less invasive equivalent of a UPPP. Uvula was trimmed at six months following the MMA, and here I go on Tuesday with a pharyngealplasty a la Dr. KL who calls this procedure a pharyngeal lift.
Because this forum has been of enormous educational benefit and emotional support to me, I feel compelled to share some of what I've been thinking and discussing with Dr. KL. I had my uvula trimmed, not entirely removed, so that it wouldn't sit uncomfortably on my tongue. I believe it had moved forward after my MMA along with everything else that was advanced; and although it had been long to begin with, it was only a piece of my sleep apnea picture. Once that procedure was completed I was fine until February of this year when I started feeling a tissue wad in my throat. Dr. KL suggested a tincture of time; but in May when I complained of this soft palate becoming even more pronounced along with a slight increase in apneic events, it was then that the pharyngealplasty became a treatment option.
I find myself looking forward to this procedure because it will open my airway even wider and minimize that fleshy soft palate. I plan on documenting the number of apneic events after July 15 and hope to show that the number has been reduced since the mini flurry I've had after noticing the tissue wad. I do not plan on dashing out yet for another sleep study unless there is some unexpected reason that I should. My follow-up one indicated a marked reduction in events; I feel better than I've felt in years.
It would seem that my approach, a learning process after the fact, has resulted in an MMA followed by a less invasive and more discreet UPPP which did not put me at risk for some of the more unpleasant side effects associated with the more invasive procedure.
