There are a bunch of possibilities for the source of drainage, but I would like to comment on the OSA link.

I have a belief that post nasal drainage, especially the viscous type, can induce airway failure during sleep (essentially OSA) by the patient subconsciously contracting the airway in order to direct drainage away from the trachea and into the esophagus. The effect and symptoms are the same as OSA.

I had a personal bout with this exact situation after successful OSA surgery. The symptoms where just like apnea and in my case were caused by exposure to spray paint which apparently my airway is extremely sensitive to. I have xray proof that my airway was contracting during this episode which lasted about 10 days. No fun and scary. The solution for me was a combination of guafinisen to thin the drainage and a little afrin to open things.

Dehydration, which may be worsened by your intensive exercise, hampers thinning of mucus too.

Just a thought.
