Episodes per hour RDI, is not a good way at looking at severity of OSA. I've seen people with 4 minute apneas, followed by breathing for a minute, back to 4 minute apneas, low oxygen desaturations below 40%. The RDI is around 12 with apneas of this length, so with the typical how bad is it, well a RDI of 12 is mild apnea.
Forget RDI, severity is what is does to your body and/or daytime alertness.
You have very severe OSA with desats in the low 60's. Using a pulse oximeter will not help. They are not that accurate and there is at least a 30 second delay in what it read and true oxygen in the blood.
You need to find a treatment that will work. The treatment with 100% success is a Trach. MMA also has a high success rate.
Trying to wake yourself up constantly during the night is not going to help. Long term sleep deprivation has negative effects on the brain also.
If you want to stop brain damage talk to a good sleep surgery doctor.
Best wishes,
