Hi Learian!
OOh! I went there!!
UCSF was the first place I went at the beginning of my MMA journey. That was because they are in my insurance network and had I decided to choose them for my MMA surgery, it wouldn't have costed me a thing.
Unfortunately, I was not comfortable with several different parts of my experience, so I chose to keep looking for a surgeon who I was more comfortable with.
I didn't particulary like the faclities in general and I felt like it was a bit "assembly-line"-like.
Since it *is* a teaching hospital, it took them a month to review my case and decide what they wanted to do with me. It was not just the surgeon deciding what would be advised for me.
I was told that other groups of people including surgeons, and orthadontists were involved in this decision making process.
At the "results" appointment, their recommendation was indeed MMA surgery, but parts of the documentation I got from them summarizing my case, was not totally accurate compared to what I had told them about myself the previous month.
...but the *main* reason I decided to keep looking for another surgeon I was more comfortable with, was because although this particular doctor said "they" had done 3 or 4 hundred jaw surgeries, when I asked *specifically* how many MMA surgeries they had done, the reply was "about 10".
I felt that was not NEARLY enough experience for what I needed to have done, so I headed to Palo Alto to Dr P and Dr R, and then to Dr. KL.
After 3 of the same opinions,(in addition to the other research I did here on the sleepnet sight *and* the different blogs) I felt I was able to make a better decision, and to this day am very happy with the decision I made.Pinski
