Posted by sleepyhead on September 04, 2008 at 17:56:30:I recently started ortho work to prepare for the MMA/GA in 2009. I am just 6 weeks into treatment though, and I am finding it so tough to communicate with the ortho my surgeon believes walks on water. The ortho doc treats me like "I have the plague" everytime I ask to speak with him. He also seems much more engaged and interested in patients who are socially well connected, successful in business, and from a social class more in line with his own (although I feel good about my station in life). I love his assistants, and agree with his treatment plan (plus it is to my benefit if my surgeon works well with him), but his style of relating feels so rejecting. I have paid his fees in full, and get to appointments on time, plus his staff like me....it's just that I am worried about what it will be like to be in treatment with him when I am recovering from surgery, and in a more vulnerable place.
I tried speaking with the ortho today by phone (plus I sent him a brief e-mail yesterday), but when I called, he said he only had "a minute", and then when another call came in, he abruptly got off the phone (mind you, in yesterday's e-mail, I asked if he would be willing to chat with me, and if so, when it would be best for me to contact him. He e-mailed back stating he would be in the office all day today, but did not specify when I should call). I may be over reacting, but this sort of exchange with this ortho is really pushing my buttons, and I am feeling between a rock and a hard place (and I hate feeling like I can't see the "forrest for the trees" in this situation" because I take pride in being clear headed and independent). I don't want to do anything hasty, and I worry that my surgeon may decide to not operate on me if I indicate his "star" ortho colleague is tying me in knots emotionally. I am hoping that if the post op period isn't that big a deal ortho treatment wise, that I can just make the best of the situation. Orthos don't usually like to accept transfer cases, and that is another complication that goes with just stopping treatment with this ortho. Any insight into this ortho-related drama, as well as strategies for digging myself out of this black hole will be most appreciated.
