Probably it would be best to come straight out - say you've talked with MMA veterans and most talk about either arch bars or bands. Tell them you were wondering about this as you haven't heard anything about fixation. Ask them what their opinion is on the need for fixation immediately after surgery.

I doubt you'll be the first person to ever ask this question!
