This is my first posting to this forum. I would like to pass along the favor of others sharing their experiences by sharing mine.

I'm a healthy (baring the OSA thing) 34 year old, 6'5", 230lbs, male. I'm in good shape (lots of yoga and rock climbing) and I've kept a pretty healthful diet since college.

I had soft tissue surgery with Dr. K.L. in June 2006. I had this surgery knowing that it would eventually be followed by either MMA or, preferably, lower jaw advancement. I had a conceptual bias for the lower jaw surgery because it's less invasive and takes place slightly farther away from some really important stuff I care deeply about. Having one's jaw broken is manly; having ones skull broken is medieval.

I proceeded down the path for lower jaw advancement. This involved having two of my lower teeth pulled (the ones behind the canines) and getting braces to close the gap. The results of this would be an 6-8mm overbite that would be corrected by the surgery.

I remember getting my braces off as a teenager and thinking how wonderful it was that I would never have to deal with them again. Ha! Joke's on me!

What was supposed to be 12 months of orthodontia turned into 24, but the gap is now closed.

Recently, I had another sleep study to see where things settled. The results indicated that the amount of advancement that I would get out of the lower jaw surgery would fall short of what I need. Quite disheartening after spending 2 years in braces trying to avoid MMA.

Tomorrow, I'm getting my surgical model cast at the orthodontist. My MMA surgery will be performed by Dr. K.L. on October 1. The countdown begins...
