About wearing braces during surgery: I am in the same
situation you are in. My surgeon and orthodontist informed me I
would need braces before, during, after the MMA/GA. I have not
yet spoke with my doctors about how (and if) my braces would
be modified in preparation for surgery. I do know from reading
non OSA orthognathic surgery blogs though, that about 1 to 4
weeks before surgery, the orthodontist will add hooks to the
braces so that the surgeon can affix rubber bands to hold the
upper and lower jaws together. Some of my braces already have
hooks on them....I am hoping these might be enough for my
surgery (I have six hooks (upper and lower canines and lower
first bicuspids) braces and eight hooks on the molars)). The
hooks that are on my braces are already a total pain.
