Yesterday I had four hooks added to the bracket on the front teeth. They are simply thin gauge wire that is twisted onto the bracket with an extended loop to make the hook. Since they sit pretty flat against the teeth, they do not tear up the lips like the bracket hooks do when first installed.

The first couple of months with braces are really unpleasant because you are so aware of them. It gets better. At 24 months, I'd say that my braces are only 20% as unpleasant as they were in the first few months of having them.
