I don't know the technical issues with fixation/nonfixation and what type of hardware he will use etc.

The main issue to me is, do you trust your surgeon or not? If not, find another. If you do, let him do his thing. In my view, it wouldn't be right to insist he do the surgery your way. It is however, your right to ask him to explain how and why he does what he does.
